Chacarita Cemetery

Chacarita Cemetery spans ninety-five hectares, making it the largest cemetery in Argentina. You can identify the grounds by the miles of tree-lined paths and the immense, dense collection of marble mausoleums that rise behind the surrounding city walls. The cemetery began as an urgent solution to the yellow fever epidemic of eighteen seventy-one, when the city’s existing burial grounds reached their limit and the elite Recoleta Cemetery refused to accept the victims of the contagion.
