The Minas de Wanda are a series of open-pit mines and tunnels where semi-precious stones, including amethyst, quartz, agate, and topaz, are extracted from basalt rock. These stones formed over one hundred and fifty million years ago when gas bubbles trapped in cooling volcanic lava crystallized into the geodes embedded in the canyon walls.
