Spit bridge

landmark

The Spit Bridge is a steel and concrete bascule bridge, identifiable by the tall, imposing control tower positioned at its center above the roadway. It opened in nineteen fifty-eight to carry heavy traffic across Middle Harbour, replacing an earlier wooden structure that had struggled to keep up with the region's growth. The bridge is unique within the city's network as the last opening bridge still in use, with its central span raised on a schedule to allow yachts and tall boats to navigate the waterway below.
