Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

cultural

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is marked by a large, singular hoop pine tree standing near the entrance, a landmark that once served as a navigational guide for boats arriving along the Brisbane River. Established in nineteen twenty-seven by Claude Reid, the site began as a refuge for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas at a time when the species faced widespread culling for the fur trade. The sanctuary started with only two koalas, named Jack and Jill.
