The Gold Coast Seaway is defined by two massive rock breakwaters that extend from the northern tip of the Southport Spit into the Pacific Ocean. Built between nineteen eighty-four and nineteen eighty-six, this channel replaced the notoriously unstable Southport Bar, which had migrated northward for decades and once claimed the coastal town of Moondarewa, now lost beneath the water. By forcing the Nerang River into a fixed exit, engineers created a reliable navigation route for boats entering the Gold Coast Broadwater from the open sea.
