Ernest Junction Railway Tunnel

historic

The Ernest Junction Railway Tunnel is a one hundred fourteen-meter-long, concrete-lined passage that curves through a hill in the Molendinar bushland. Built between eighteen eighty-five and eighteen eighty-nine, it was a critical piece of the South Coast railway line, a route that allowed Brisbane residents to travel to the coast for the first time. The tunnel was one of the first in Queensland to use concrete, a cost-saving choice that allowed the work to be completed by less specialized laborers.
