Princes Park in Carlton North is defined by its long, slender shape, stretching nearly two kilometers between Royal Parade and Garton Street. Formally proclaimed in eighteen seventy-three and named to honor Albert, Prince Consort, the land once contained swampy terrain and a rubbish tip before its development into public parkland. Today, the park serves as a green corridor lined with mature elm and Moreton Bay fig trees, bordered on one side by the Melbourne General Cemetery.
