Sunset Hospital

historic

Sunset Hospital sits on an elevated limestone scarp overlooking the Swan River, characterized by its collection of low, pale stone buildings arranged in a disciplined, military-style layout. Established in nineteen oh six as the Claremont Old Men's Home, the site was originally chosen for its isolation to house destitute elderly men away from the city center. Construction relied on local limestone quarried directly from the nearby river cliffs, which workers hauled to the site by horse and jigger.
