The Pferdeschwemme is a wide, stone-lined basin tucked directly against the sheer vertical cliff of the Mönchsberg. Designed in sixteen ninety-three by the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, this water feature served as a grand communal bath for the horses housed in the prince-archbishops’ nearby stables. The basin allowed grooms to lead animals directly into the water for cooling and cleaning after ceremonial parades.
