Basilika St. Michael

religious

The Basilika St. Michael is defined by the twin fifty-two-meter-high towers that overlook the market square of Mondsee. This structure originated as a Benedictine monastery church founded by the Bavarian Duke Odilo the Second in seven hundred forty-eight. While the current building mostly dates to its fifteenth-century Gothic reconstruction, its interior reflects a significant seventeenth-century transformation led by the Swiss-born sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler, who lived and worked in the monastery for over forty-four years.
