The Museum of Applied Arts, known locally as the MAK, is housed in a grand red-brick building constructed in the Italian Early Renaissance style. Completed in eighteen seventy-one, it holds the distinction of being the first museum building erected along Vienna's famous Ringstraße. Its exterior is marked by ornate arcades, and a permanent light installation by artist James Turrell illuminates the structure after dark.
