The Museum of Military History is housed within a vast, fortress-like brick complex known as the Arsenal, defined by its blend of Moorish-Byzantine and neo-Gothic styles. Completed in eighteen fifty-six, it stands as the oldest purpose-built museum in Austria. The architects, Ludwig Förster and Theophil Hansen, designed the building not only to store armaments but to manifest the power of the Habsburg monarchy in the wake of the eighteen forty-eight revolution. Its entrance hall is lined with marble statues of fifty-six historical army commanders, guiding visitors into a space that chronicles centuries of warfare through uniforms, weapons, and military technology.
