Yanar Dag, or the Burning Mountain, is a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula where a wall of fire burns continuously along the base of a slope. This flame rises up to three meters from a porous layer of sandstone, fueled by a constant seep of natural gas escaping from underground reservoirs. Unlike other geological sites in the region that require human maintenance or have extinguished due to gas extraction, these flames persist regardless of the weather, rain, or snow.
