The Basílica do Senhor do Bonfim stands atop the Sacred Hill on the Itapagipe Peninsula, distinguished by its twin bell towers and neoclassical interior sheltered behind a rococo facade. This eighteenth-century church originated from a vow made by a Portuguese sea captain named Teodósio Rodrigues de Faria. After surviving a violent storm at sea, he pledged to bring an image of Jesus Christ to Brazil, eventually installing the statue here in seventeen forty-five to fulfill his promise.
