Banteay Srei is defined by its rosy hue, a result of the distinctive pink sandstone used throughout its construction. This tenth-century temple, located northeast of the main Angkor complex, is recognized as the jewel of Khmer art for its exceptionally deep and detailed stone carvings. Unlike most major structures in the region, it was not commissioned by a king. It was built in nine hundred sixty-seven by Yajnavaraha and his brother Vishnukumara, who served as counselors to King Rajendravarman the Second.
