Pre Rup is recognizable by the striking orange-red hue of its massive brick towers, which rise in a pyramid shape above the surrounding plains. Built in nine sixty-one AD, this temple was the state monument for King Rajendravarman the Second, marking a significant period when the Khmer capital was returned to Angkor. It was designed as a temple mountain, a physical representation of the mythical Mount Meru, with five sanctuary towers at its summit dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and other deities.
