The Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay are defined by a deep, expansive hollow that lies well below the surrounding ground level. This central space, known as the Sunken Garden, originated as a limestone quarry operated by Robert Pim Butchart, who moved his family to Vancouver Island in nineteen oh four to produce cement.
