Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites are marked by the Fisgard Lighthouse, a white, brick tower that stands at the entrance of Esquimalt Harbour. Built in eighteen sixty, it is the oldest lighthouse on Canada’s west coast and was established by the British even before the colony joined Canada. Next to this beacon, the stone batteries and underground bunkers of Fort Rodd Hill served as a coastal artillery fortress from eighteen ninety-five until nineteen fifty-six.
