The Diefenbunker is a four-story, one-hundred-thousand-square-foot facility buried seventy-five feet into a hillside, identifiable by the heavy blast doors that lead into its subterranean tunnels. Constructed between nineteen fifty-nine and nineteen sixty-one, it was designed as the Central Emergency Government Headquarters to shelter over five hundred key officials during a nuclear strike. While the government authorized roughly fifty such sites across the country, this was the largest and only one situated in the immediate vicinity of the nation's capital.
