Tommy Thompson Park sits on a long, man-made peninsula known as the Leslie Street Spit that stretches five kilometers into Lake Ontario. This landform is entirely artificial, constructed starting in the late nineteen fifties by the Toronto Harbour Commissioners to serve as a protected outer harbor. Over several decades, millions of cubic meters of dredged sand and construction debris were transported here, effectively burying the lakebed under rubble from demolished downtown homes and skyscrapers.
