The Cementerio General de Santiago is marked by a distinctive domed gatehouse that faces the semicircular Plaza La Paz, flanked by long, arched colonnades. Founded in eighteen twenty-one by Bernardo O’Higgins, the leader of Chilean independence, the grounds span over two hundred acres in the Recoleta district. It holds more than two million burials, effectively functioning as a small city of the dead with its own paved streets, avenues, and towering, ornate mausoleums that display a wide range of international architectural styles.
