Klis Fortress

landmark

Klis Fortress rises as a series of limestone walls and ramparts built directly into a sharp, narrow ridge between the Mosor and Kozjak mountains. This position, overlooking the pass between the Adriatic coast and the Balkan interior, made it a critical gatekeeper for empires ranging from the Romans to the Venetians. It remains difficult to distinguish where the natural cliff ends and the man-made masonry begins.
