The Sha'ar HaShamayim Synagogue on Adly Street is recognizable by a facade featuring ancient Egyptian motifs, including massive pylons flanking a central recessed field and stone reliefs of palm trees and pomegranates. Designed by Maurice Joseph Cattaui and Eduard Matasek and built between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen oh five, the structure sits in the heart of downtown Cairo. Its exterior incorporates neo-Pharaonic and neo-Assyrian elements, such as a cavetto cornice and double scrolls of volutes, which were intended to evoke the style of ancient Egyptian temples.
