The Cairo Tower rises one hundred eighty-seven meters above Gezira Island, identifiable by its open lattice-work exterior that flares outward at the top like the petals of a lotus flower. Designed by Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib and completed in nineteen sixty-one, the concrete structure is covered in millions of small mosaic tiles and rests on a base of polished Aswan granite.
