Great Sphinx of Giza

monument

The Great Sphinx of Giza appears as a colossal, reclining figure with the body of a lion and the head of a human, carved directly from the limestone bedrock of the Giza Plateau. Measuring two hundred and forty feet long and sixty-six feet high, the statue is a monolith sculpted during Egypt's Old Kingdom, likely around twenty-five hundred BCE. While most scholars link the monument to the pharaoh Khafre, the identity of the face and the exact timing of its creation remain subjects of active debate among archaeologists.
