The Carter House is a modest, mud-brick building recognizable by the dome rising above its central hall. Designed and built by British archaeologist Howard Carter in nineteen ten, it sat on a low hill that local residents knew as Ulwit al-Dibban, or the Hill of the Flies. It served as his living quarters and the headquarters for his excavations in the Valley of the Kings until he died in nineteen thirty-nine.
