The Mémorial National de la Prison de Montluc is identified by its high, gray perimeter walls that enclose a nineteenth-century-style military complex on Rue Jeanne Hachette. Originally built in nineteen twenty-one as a military prison, the site became a central place of detention for the Gestapo after they occupied Lyon in February nineteen forty-three. During the occupation, the prison served as a holding site for thousands of resistors, Jews, and hostages who were frequently transferred to transit camps or execution sites.
