The Camp des Milles is recognizable by its heavy brick industrial profile, a former tile factory that sits near the village of Les Milles. Opened by the French Third Republic in September nineteen thirty-nine, it began as an internment site for German and Austrian nationals living in the south of France. Many of these prisoners were refugees who had fled the Third Reich only to find themselves detained as enemy aliens.
