Le Fort Carré

historic

Le Fort Carré rises as a four-pointed, star-shaped stone fortification perched on a rocky promontory twenty-six meters above the Mediterranean. Built in the sixteenth century under the order of King Henry the Second, this structure acted as a strategic sentinel to monitor the nearby border between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Savoy. Its geometric layout of four arrow-head shaped bastions was later refined by the military engineer Vauban to bolster the defense of Antibes.
