The Port de Cassis is defined by its small, sheltered harbor filled with colorful fishing boats that sit directly beneath the shade of the towering, thirteen-hundred-eighty-one Château de Cassis. This natural bay has served as a center for maritime activity since the first century before Christ, when the Romans established a settlement known as Carcisis Portus here to facilitate trade across the Mediterranean.
