The Stade Vélodrome is unmistakable for the vast, white, wave-shaped canopy that appears to float above the arena. This translucent, scalloped roof, which rises sixty-five meters at its peak, was designed to shelter spectators from the region’s strong winds and rain. Opened in nineteen thirty-seven, the stadium originally featured a cycling track that gave the venue its name, though that track was removed during the nineteen eighties to make way for additional seating.
