The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is unmistakable for its rose-colored facade and red pantile roof, standing on the narrowest point of the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula. Built between nineteen oh five and nineteen twelve for Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild, the villa overlooks the Mediterranean with views of both the Bay of Villefranche and the Bay of Beaulieu. The Baroness, a member of the wealthy Rothschild banking family, commissioned the house after a difficult divorce from her husband, Maurice Ephrussi, a compulsive gambler whose debts once reached twelve million gold francs.
