Mahnmal Rosa Winkel

The Mahnmal Rosa Winkel is an inverted triangle of pink stone, chiseled with the words, "Slaughtered. Silenced. To the homosexual victims of National Socialism." It is set into the exterior wall of the Nollendorfplatz subway station, a site chosen because the neighborhood around the square was once the center of Berlin’s gay and trans social life. Before nineteen thirty-three, the area hosted numerous bars and clubs where the community met, but the Nazi regime systematically shut these doors, using raids on the premises to identify individuals and build the lists that would lead to their deportation and murder in concentration camps.
