Viðey House stands out in the landscape as a starkly formal, white stone mansion set against the grassy hills of Viðey Island. Completed in seventeen fifty-five, it holds the distinction of being the oldest stone building in all of Iceland. The structure was commissioned by Skúli Magnússon, the royal treasurer who earned the title of the Father of Reykjavík for his efforts to jumpstart Icelandic industry during the eighteenth century.
