Two massive, iron-grated gates stand at the center of the Attari-Wagah border, marking the division between India and Pakistan along the historic Grand Trunk Road. This crossing is the only land route between the two nations that hosts a daily, highly stylized military performance known as the Beating Retreat. Each evening, shortly before sunset, soldiers from the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers march toward these gates in a synchronized display of high kicks, aggressive stomping, and sharp, military precision.
