The Government Museum complex in Egmore is a sprawling sixteen-acre campus defined by its historic Pantheon building. This site was once the city’s social hub in the eighteenth century, where British elites gathered for balls, banquets, and dramatic performances. In eighteen fifty-four, the government repurposed this assembly hall to house a growing collection of geological specimens that had previously been kept in a cramped space at Fort Saint George.
