Gedung Candra Naya is a traditional Chinese mansion distinguished by its sweeping, curved roof and ornate moon gates, which appear unexpectedly between the modern high-rise apartments of the Green Central City superblock. Built in the late eighteenth century or around eighteen oh seven, this house served as the grand residence for the Khouw family of Tamboen. Among its residents was Khouw Kim An, who held the title of Majoor der Chinezen, or Major of the Chinese, serving as a prominent leader of the Chinese community in Batavia until his death in a Japanese concentration camp in nineteen forty-five.
