Naqsh-e Rostam

landmark

Four colossal royal tombs are carved directly into the perpendicular cliff face of the Husayn Kuh mountain. These sepulchers, designed with cross-shaped façades, mark the final resting place of four Achaemenid kings, including Darius the Great and his son, Xerxes. The tombs are positioned high above the ground, a design intended to keep the remains safe and signify an upward journey toward the heavens in accordance with Zoroastrian beliefs.
