Persepolis rises from the plain of Marvdasht on an immense stone terrace, identifiable by the tall, weathered columns and monumental gateways that remain from the height of the Achaemenid Empire. Founded around five hundred eighteen before the common era by Darius the Great, the site served as the ceremonial capital where kings received tribute from across their vast domain. Its architecture was a deliberate display of imperial power, featuring grand palaces and intricate stone reliefs that show processions of dignitaries from distant lands arriving to honor the king of kings.
