Blake’s Castle

historic

Blake’s Castle on Quay Street is a three-story medieval tower house built around fourteen seventy. You can identify it by its limestone rubble walls, a flat roof with a crenelated parapet, and the projecting machicolation on the top floor above the entrance. This stone structure once served as the Galway County Gaol, where in seventeen eighty-eight, a visitor described prisoners held in rooms with dirt floors and no fireplaces.
