The Sostegno di Castagnolo is a historic navigation lock located on the banks of the Navile Canal. Constructed in fourteen ninety-seven by order of Ercole Bentivoglio, it was designed to help boats negotiate the steep changes in elevation along the canal, which served as a primary waterway connecting Bologna to the Po Valley and the Adriatic Sea until the early twentieth century.
