The War Memorial is a towering, thirty-meter-high structure faced with light-colored stone that stands prominently on the shores of Lake Como. Inaugurated on November fourth, nineteen thirty-three, the monument was designed by the architect Giuseppe Terragni to honor the six hundred and fifty soldiers from Como who died during the First World War. Its stark, rationalist design draws its inspiration from a nineteen fourteen sketch by the futurist architect Antonio Sant'Elia, who was a native of Como and died in battle during the conflict.
