The port of Vernazza is identifiable by its natural amphitheater shape, created by a breakwater that guards a small bay filled with colorful fishing boats. It is the only natural harbor in the Cinque Terre, a feature that historically made the village a vital maritime base for the Republic of Genoa. Since at least the eleventh century, this landing has functioned as a primary point for trade and defensive naval operations against pirate raids.
