Brera Botanical Garden

The Brera Botanical Garden is defined by two eighteenth-century elliptical stone tanks that sit amid rows of long, narrow flowerbeds. Tucked behind the Palazzo Brera, this five-thousand-square-meter space holds over one thousand plant species, including medicinal herbs originally grown to supply the nearby spice works. The garden was established in seventeen seventy-four by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who directed Abbot Fulgenzio Vitman to design the layout for scientific study.
