Piazza Armando Diaz is a rectangular space defined by its stark contrast to the historic maze of medieval streets it replaced. Developed in the nineteen thirties following plans by urbanist Cesare Albertini, the square features rationalist architecture and large office buildings that replaced the shops, houses, and churches that once filled the area. Among its structures is the Palazzo dell’Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni, completed in nineteen thirty-seven by architect Piero Portaluppi.
