Marina Grande is the main maritime gateway to the island of Capri, defined by a naturally sheltered basin on the northern shore at the foot of Monte Solaro. You can recognize this area by the cluster of colorful, whitewashed houses along the promenade and the constant arrival of ferries and hydrofoils from the mainland. While it serves as the primary transport hub for the island today, its use as a harbor dates back to Roman times. Emperors Augustus and Tiberius both utilized these waters to move between Capri and the mainland, leaving behind traces of docking structures that remain visible along the quay.
