The Royal Palace of Naples presents a long, imposing facade to Piazza del Plebiscito, distinguished by eight large statues of former kings standing in exterior niches. Commissioned in sixteen hundred by the Spanish viceroy Fernando Ruiz de Castro, the palace was intended to host King Philip the Third of Spain. While the architect Domenico Fontana designed a structure of grand representation, the Spanish monarch never actually made the trip to visit his new residence.
