The House of the Tragic Poet is identified by a floor mosaic at its entrance showing a chained dog with the inscription "Cave Canem," or "Beware of the Dog." Dating to the second century BCE, this Roman residence is modest in scale but known for interior decorations that rank among the most sophisticated in Pompeii. Its walls and floors display elaborate frescoes and mosaics depicting Greek mythological scenes, including figures such as Achilles and the marriage of Zeus and Hera.
