The Solfatara is a shallow volcanic crater defined by its whitish-yellow ground and the constant, pungent scent of sulfur. Formed roughly four thousand years ago, this dormant volcano remains thermally active, venting jets of hot steam from fumaroles and bubbling through pools of mud. Because the surface covers a void filled with subterranean gases, the ground here produces a hollow sound when struck or walked upon.
