The Mausoleum of Maxentius is a massive, circular brick structure that sits alongside the ancient Appian Way. It is recognizable by the way a later brick farmhouse, once belonging to the Torlonia family, partially obscures the tomb’s original entrance. Built in the early fourth century, the site was commissioned by Emperor Maxentius as part of a grand imperial complex that also included a private palace and a large chariot-racing circus.
